FIFA World Cup 2026 in Atlanta

May 27, 2026 By CPNO Staff

How might it affect Candler Park.

By Claude (Anthropic), edited by Roger Bakeman. Atlanta is one of the host cities for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with matches scheduled at Mercedes-Benz Stadium from June 15 to July 15. While the excitement is real, so are the logistical ripple effects — and Candler Park residents should be aware of how game days (June 15, 18, 21, 24, 27 and July 1, 7, 15) might affect getting around our neighborhood.

The Big Picture

Mercedes-Benz Stadium sits about five miles west of Candler Park, but major events there tend to create traffic congestion that spreads well beyond downtown. With FIFA matches drawing tens of thousands of visitors from around the world, the city expects significant road closures, transit disruptions, and parking restrictions on and around game days.

What to Expect

  • Increased cut-through traffic. When downtown and midtown corridors get congested, GPS apps often route drivers through residential neighborhoods. Streets like McLendon Avenue, Clifton Road, and Dekalb Avenue may see heavier-than-usual traffic as fans seek alternate routes.
  • Delays on key corridors. DeKalb Avenue and Moreland Avenue, both major routes in and out of Candler Park, are likely to experience slowdowns, particularly in the hours before and after matches.
  • MARTA as your friend. The City of Atlanta will strongly encourage transit use during the tournament. The Edgewood/Candler Park MARTA station on the Green and Blue lines offers a direct connection toward downtown, making it one of the best options for residents who want to attend matches — or simply avoid the chaos.

Planning Ahead

If you have appointments, deliveries, or events scheduled on match days, build in extra time or consider rerouting.

The Silver Lining

For those who stay home, game days may actually make Candler Park feel quieter than usual — many residents will head out early, and the neighborhood’s walkable amenities (the park, the market, local restaurants) will still be right here. And for soccer fans, the Edgewood/Candler Park station puts you just a short ride from the action.
