Bringing Color to one of Atlanta’s Vibrant Communities
McLendon Avenue is the backbone of the Candler Park Neighborhood, connecting Little Five Points to the Little Candler and Clifton-McLendon business districts. It is a road that has a high volume of pedestrian, bicycle, and automobile traffic, and several traffic calming initiatives (bulbouts, medians, four-way stops) have been implemented to make it safer and more pleasant for everyone who uses it. However, it is now time to take a step forward and make McLendon a statement.
The McLendon Mile Committee was created by the CPNO board to explore ways to further activate McLendon Avenue between Moreland Avenue and Clifton Road. The committee is focusing on creating a series of art installations that will make travel more enjoyable while also burnishing the Candler Park’s reputation as a creative and funky place to live.
Before soliciting proposals, the committee will develop parameters for the art installation. These will address budget, qualifications, durability, safety, and legal issues among others. The task force will then develop a project timeline, create the call for artists, answer questions, review proposals, and bring the proposals for a vote by CPNO.
The committee currently has two members. We are looking for people who want to get involved with this committee. I am recently retired so I have time to commit to this, but I need other people to offer perspective and help guide the committee. You do not need to be an artist to participate.
The commitment is 2-3 hours a month, as I expect the committee will meet once or twice a month.
Please reach out at McLendonMile@candlerpark.org if you have any questions or would like to get involved with the committee.
